World No.13 Nick Kyrgios declared he can win next month’s n Open, but former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash thinks the Canberra star would need “things … to go right for him” to claim his first major.
Kyrgios is returning to action in the Hopman Cup in the New Year after a rollercoaster 2016, where he had his best year on the court, winning three titles.
He also courted controversy, copping a three-week ban for his meltdown in the Shanghai Open in October.
Following the Hopman Cup, the 21-year-old will fine-tune for the Aussie Open with the Fast4 Showdown in Sydney.
Kyrgios felt his enforced layoff was a blessing and would allow him to return to the court fresh for the year ahead.
In an interview with Fairfax Media, he declared he was in the mix to become the first n man to win the Aussie Open since Mark Edmondson in 1976.
“Never say never. Someone has to win it and I am more than capable,” Kyrgios said last week.
“Will I? I don’t know. But will I slog my guts out trying to? Without a doubt.”
But two-time Davis Cup winner Cash felt 2017 might still be too soon for Kyrgios.
Cash made the final of the Aussie Open twice – in 1987 and 88 – as well as claiming the Wimbledon title 19 years ago.
He felt the grass court title in London would be Kyrgios’s best chance to win a major next year, but he’d need an easy passage through the early rounds.
“I think it’s a common consensus Nick is not fit enough to win a slam yet, unless everything goes very easily in the early rounds,” Cash told The National.
“I think Wimbledon is probably his best chance of good success this year, though he can play well at any of the slams. Things need to go right for him to grab a slam this year.”
While Cash didn’t think Kyrgios would win his first major next year, the former Daramalan student did bring up a first during the Christmas period.
